We all know that Calne has been experiencing a very offensive smell over recent weeks. The fact is that the smell has been around for years on and off, but for some reason it has been staying around for the last three weeks.

I know many are convinced that it is the Landfill, but I for one am keeping an open mind as it could be one or even more than one of the following.

  • The current Open landfill site operated by Hills
  • Former closed landfill site, which is not being maintained / monitored, and smell is being released due to high ground water.
  • The illegal discharge (for over 400 hours) of sewage into a tributary of Abberd Brook, by Wessex Water
  • Or something else?

I think the only source that can be ruled out for now is a Gas Leak.  Over the last three weeks, Wales and West had over 40 reports of Gas leaks in the area, and as far as I am aware, only one was genuine.

I have now enlisted the help of one of the towns MPs, Sarah Gibson to put some pressure on the authorities and all potentially responsible organisationms, to trace the source of the smell and put an end to it, once and for all.
